Maha Shivaratri- Maha Shivratri is celebrated to honor Lord Shiva, all over the Indian Hindus in the month of February _ March (Phalgun) every year. This year 2021 Shivratri falls on March 11.
According to Hindu beliefs, Shivratri is celebrated on the day when Lord Shiva drank poison, which was excreted from the ocean while Samudra Manthan, to save the world.
Have you noticed the blue color on the neck of Lord Shiva images? This has happened while Lord Shiva drinking the poison, his wife caught his neck from him to stop drink, which stuck on his throat and left the blue mark. Due to this Lord Shiva is known as Neelkanth (Blue Throat).
What people do on Maha Shivratri?
On the day of Shivratri people do not sleep throughout the night. Spend overnight listening to Lord Shiva stories, devotional songs, singing songs, doing chant mantras, and do meditate. Early morning take bath and visit Shiva Temple. You can do all these at home also. From the Sunset start doing puja and continue it till sunrise. People offer Bilva leaves, white color flowers, water from the Ganges, sandalwood paste, sacred ash, and milk. People perform these pujas with full dedication to Lord Shiva and considers it as auspicious.
After finishing all pujas start to donate prasad, food, clothes, and many more useful things to the poor and needy people.
Holi - Holi is an Indian Festival of Colours, celebrated at the beginning of the Spring, the end of winter. It is also a festival of entering the spring harvest season. 2021 Holi festival falls on March 28-29. Holi was a Hindu festival in ancient times. Gradually it became popular among non-Hindu as well. Holi is spread worldwide among Indians.
In addition to India and Nepal, subcontinent countries like Suriname, Guyana Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa, Mauritius, Fiji, Malaysia, Jamaica, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Also spread to North America, parts of Europe also in the Netherlands.
Literally, it is a festival of victory of good over evil, and happiness and love are spread. People consider Holi as a festival of happiness to take advantage to repair the broken relations to spread love, meeting people distributes sweets and other gifts, laugh and play with colours in their way of celebrations.
Holi is one day and one-night festival. The Festival commences on the evening of the Purnima, which means Full Moon Day. Holi festival falls in the Hindu month Phalguna, which comes almost in the middle of the month of March in the Gregorian Calendar.
In the evening the time which Holi functions begin is known as 'HOLIKA DAHAN', which means the burning of demon Holika also can call Chhoti Holi, the main Holi will be started of the following day. In various states, Holi festivals knew various names such as Rangwali Holi, Dhuleti, Dhulandi, or Phagwah.
